AAIMH NSW Event:

The importance of individualised developmentally supportive care in the NICU - what we are doing to support longer-term infant and family outcomes

OVERVIEW

For more than four decades, neonatal intensive care units have integrated developmental care as a framework to help buffer infants against the unexpected experiences of intensive care. Central to this approach is a shift from task-driven routines to infant-led, cue-based interactions. This session will explore the goals of an infant- and family-centred developmental care framework, examine the impact of its application alongside routine caregiving practices, and identify the short- and long-term implications for infants and families within and beyond the NICU.

PRESENTER
Nadine Griffiths is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Western Sydney University. She is a Senior NIDCAP Trainer, NIDCAP Training Centre Co-director and author/co-author of two book chapters and multiple peer reviewed journals. She is an advocate of neurodevelopmental care and is undertaking PhD research evaluating the impact of developmental care education on infants, parents and staff in the NICU.
