Please join the Queensland committee for the Australian Association for Infant Mental Health as we come together to discuss seminal papers
in the field of infant mental health. Our second paper on the 10th of August is "The process of therapeutic change involving
implicit knowledge: Some implications of developmental observations for adult psychotherapy”, published in 1998 by Daniel Stern. This
classic paper by Dan Stern was one among a seminal special issue of the Infant Mental Health Journal that showcased the implications of
science and theory of infancy for psychotherapy change processes. The discussion will use this paper as a springboard to look at the
wider issues of developmental science for understanding human change processes to support infants and their caregivers by thinking at both
levels.
Leading the discussion will be Joe Coyne. Joe is a clinical, educational and developmental psychologist known for more than three decades
of work in applied developmental psychology, child and family mental health, and adult psychotherapy. He has built a dual career in
clinical practice and academic teaching, with a strong focus on understanding how early relational experiences shape lifelong
wellbeing. He has a particular focus on attachment, emotion regulation, and family systems, and is an accredited Circle of Security
Intensive therapist and supervisor.
Joe is a longtime AAIMH member who currently sits on both the National AAIMH Board and the Queensland AAIMH Committee.
