Parental Insightfulness and Its Importance for Healthy Development: Research Evidence and Clinical Implications
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
David Oppenheim, PhD is Professor of Psychology and Vice Chair of the School for Psychological Sciences at the University
of Haifa, Israel. He also heads the Centre for the Study of Child Development in that University. Dr. Oppenheim studies parental
insightfulness and parent-child interactions and their impact on children’s socioemotional development including attachment. His work
stresses the importance of including fathers in addition to mothers, and examining triadic, mother-father-child interactions in addition to
dyadic, parent-child interactions. He conducts longitudinal studies of neurotypical children, children with atypical development such as
Autism and Intellectual Disability, and children at high risk such as those in foster care and those whose parents experienced trauma.
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Parental insightfulness, a measure of parental mentalization with regard to the child's inner world, is considered to provide the foundation
for sensitive and emotionally regulating parenting. In this presentation Professor Oppenheim will review what we mean by
insightfulness and describe its assessment using a video-replay interview. A review of studies that demonstrate its importance for
secure attachment will be presented. Presentation of a number of studies examining insightfulness will be presented including with
fathers, parents of Autistic children and cross culturally.
Throughout the talk there will be opportunities for the audience to share their reflections regarding the meaning of insightfulness research for their work with parents and children.
